Robert D. “Bob” Lowe

2011 Lafayette Civic Cup Honoree

The 2011 Lafayette Civic Cup was awarded to Robert D. “Bob” Lowe, a lifelong businessman, veteran, and philanthropist whose legacy of service has left a profound mark on Acadiana.

Known affectionately as “One Wing” during his military service, Lowe’s life has been defined by resilience, generosity, and a deep commitment to others. After serving his country in World War II, he returned home to help transform Lafayette’s petroleum industry into an international powerhouse. But his accomplishments reached far beyond the battlefield and the business world.

Together with his wife, Jewell, Lowe co-founded 232-HELP/211, a program that grew into a national model for providing educational resources and assistance to individuals and families in need. He was also a founding member of what became the Lafayette Association for Retarded Citizens, championing services for the developmentally disabled.

Over the years, Lowe served on the boards of numerous banks, businesses, and civic organizations, and was a steadfast supporter of the United Way of Acadiana. He credited his success to the partnerships and friendships he built with business associates, community leaders, and state officials, who shared his belief in creating opportunities and giving back.

Reflecting on the honor, Lowe described receiving the Civic Cup as “one of the greatest honors I’ve ever had in my life.” His story, shaped by hardship during the Great Depression and perseverance through challenges, including surviving Pearl Harbor, underscored his lifelong philosophy that “there is a supreme being that gives us hope.”

The Lafayette Civic Cup recognized Lowe not only for his business leadership, but for a lifetime of generosity, humility, and service to others. His example continues to inspire the spirit of giving that defines Lafayette.
