About

2012 Lafayette Civic Cup Honoree

For nearly eight decades, the Lafayette Civic Cup has recognized those whose generosity, leadership, and vision have strengthened the community. In 2011, that tradition continued with the selection of Dwight S. “Bo” Ramsay, a respected businessman, veteran, and philanthropist, as the 79th recipient of the Civic Cup.

Born in Arkansas, Ramsay’s path to Lafayette was marked first by military service. As a young man, he served with the 11th Airborne Division during the occupation of Japan and later fought on the front lines of the Korean conflict. He was wounded at the infamous Battle of Heartbreak Ridge, an experience that shaped his resilience and sense of purpose.

After returning home, Ramsay entered the oil and gas industry, a career that would bring him to Lafayette in 1962 with ALCO Oil and Gas. He quickly rose through the ranks, eventually leading operations and later founding his own independent oil and gas companies. Over time, Ramsay built enterprises that employed more than 300 people, proving his belief that Lafayette—not Houston or any other oil hub—was the best place to grow both a business and a community.

What truly set Ramsay apart was not only his professional success but his profound and often quiet philanthropy. Many of his most significant contributions were made without fanfare. He believed in solving problems directly, whether large or small.

One example often recalled is his support of the Lafayette Community Health Care Clinic. After learning that the clinic was burdened with debt, Ramsay acted decisively: he went to the bank and erased it, allowing the organization to continue providing essential services. As one community leader noted, “He saw a way to make it better, and he did.”

His generosity extended across Acadiana, touching healthcare, education, and civic development. Ramsay embodied the Boy Scout motto of service, though he often downplayed recognition. Fellow Civic Cup recipient Paul Hilliard reflected: “Most people do not realize what Bo has done. When all the history books are put together, we are going to find out that Bo Ramsay was one of the most significant people to ever live in this community.”

At the Civic Cup banquet held at the Petroleum Club, Ramsay expressed gratitude and humility for the recognition. “To receive this award is most humbling,” he said. “We’re plowing new ground tonight when you invite a renegade like me to be part of the group.”

Despite his modesty, Ramsay’s selection was seen as obvious to many who knew his impact. As past recipient Bob Lowe shared, “When all the history books are put together, Bo Ramsay will stand out as one of the most significant people to have ever lived in this community.”

Legacy of the Civic Cup

The Civic Cup was established in 1933 by the Young Men’s Business Club as a way to honor one individual each year who exemplifies selfless community service. Today, past recipients continue the tradition by carefully selecting honorees based on letters of nomination submitted by the community. Like those before him, Bo Ramsay joined an elite circle of men and women whose vision and generosity have shaped Lafayette for generations.

Dwight S. “Bo” Ramsay’s life reflects the very ideals of the Civic Cup—humility, generosity, service, and a deep love for Lafayette. His legacy continues to inspire, reminding us all that one individual, acting with heart and determination, can change the course of a community.
