Scholarship Recipient Named for the Eloise Voorhies Gary Memorial Award Fund

Lafayette, LA – The Eloise Voorhies Gary Memorial Award Fund, a scholarship fund at Community Foundation of Acadiana (CFA), has named Olivia LeBlanc as the 2014 recipient. LeBlanc, a junior majoring in art education at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette received $500 to help pay for tuition and educational expenses on Friday, April 4.

A graduate of St. Thomas More Catholic High School, LeBlanc was able to begin her studies in art by taking elective art courses and participating in the Art Club. The award was open to any junior or senior pursuing an art education degree at a south Louisiana college or university.

LeBlanc’s love of art as a means of expression began at an early age and she hopes to share that love with others as she pursues a career as an art educator. LeBlanc said, "Receiving this award recognizes how important art education is and my love and passion for it.”

The Eloise Voorhies Gary Memorial Award Fund, created by Lynn Gary in memory of her mother, Eloise, honors her legacy as an artist and educator who believed in art as an important part of a child’s education.

Lynn Gary said, "It is so meaningful to be able, with the EVG Memorial, to recognize and support a college student studying to be an art teacher for children K-12. I hope that Olivia LeBlanc, our 2014 recipient, will have a career as effective for her future art students and as enjoyable for herself as my mother had.”

Eloise Voorhies Gary (January 18, 1912 – February 27, 2003) was a well-known artist and inspiring educator whose career concluded in her service as Supervisor for Art in the St. Martin Parish School System where she produced a handbook for classroom teachers titled "Art: Involvement”. Two of Gary’s etchings may be purchased through CFA at www.cfacadiana.org/EVG. The etchings are $120 each and all proceeds benefit the Fund.

The Eloise Voorhies Gary Memorial Award Scholarship Fund, a fund at Community Foundation of Acadiana, awards Olivia LeBlanc as the 2014 award recipient with $500 to help pay for tuition and educational expenses.
