Al Berard Memorial Music Fund Grants $10,000 to New Music Program

Lafayette, LA – The Al Berard Memorial Music Fund, a fund at Community Foundation of Acadiana (CFA), recently granted $10,000 to the St. Martin Parish School Board for the new St. Martin Parish Gifted and Talented Music Program.

The grant will help to purchase instruments, books and other supplies for the music enrichment program. The program augments and enriches musical skills and awareness for students who have an aptitude for music. Jonno Fishberg, St. Martin Parish talented music teacher said, "Laura Huval saw there was a need in St. Martin Parish. This program is in service of what Al Berard believed in. I’m honored to be involved with all of this because it’s really important.”

Funds for the grant were raised from the Al Berard Music Festival which was held last November at the Henry Guidry Memorial Park in Henderson, LA. Fund owner and daughter of Al Berard, Laura Huval, said, "My family was overjoyed at the success of the music festival which allowed us to make these grants to the community. Supporting this new music program in St. Martin Parish would have been what my father would have wanted for his community.”

The Al Berard Memorial Music Fund promotes Acadiana's unique musical culture by providing instruments, master teachers and music scholarships to students of all ages. The fund honors the life of the late Cajun musician, Al Berard, who was a pillar of his community and a mentor for music lovers everywhere. His passion was to teach everyone he met about his love for music and for the Cajun/Creole culture.
